“He did it to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.” – Romans 3:26
At the cross, the justice of God and the mercy of God met. Sin had to be judged, but God’s love found a way for us to be forgiven. Jesus took our place, bearing our punishment, so that God could remain just, yet declare us righteous. This is the heart of the Gospel: God is both just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus.
Think about what this means. If you were in a courtroom guilty of every charge, you would expect the Judge to condemn you. But instead, this Judge steps down from His bench, takes your place, pays the penalty Himself, and then declares you free. That is what God has done for us in Christ. You are not condemned, you are justified. You are not guilty, you are forgiven.

The story of Martin Luther in Germany beautifully illustrates this revelation. For years, Luther tried everything to appease a holy God, even punishing himself in search of peace. Yet he found no relief until he discovered the truth of justification by faith in Romans. It was like a light from heaven breaking into his heart. That revelation not only set Luther free, but it sparked the Reformation, changing the course of history. The Holy Spirit used one man’s discovery of God’s righteousness through faith to impact millions of lives.
The same revelation that transformed Luther’s heart is for you today. You don’t need to fear judgment, because in Christ, judgment has already been carried out. You don’t need to wonder if God accepts you, because the cross has settled the question forever. The Holy Spirit is here to assure you that you stand before God justified, clean, and fully loved.
“At the cross, God’s justice and God’s mercy met, and the verdict was declared: righteous through faith in Jesus.“
The Good News is, no matter how far you think you’ve fallen, the cross is greater. God’s justice has been satisfied, and His mercy flows freely to you. You can live with boldness, knowing the verdict has been declared: righteous in Christ Jesus.
Prayer: Father, thank You for being both just and the justifier of my life. Thank You that through Jesus I am no longer guilty but declared righteous. Holy Spirit, fill my heart with confidence in this truth and help me to live every day in the joy of my salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
