“And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water … And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.” – Numbers 20 :7-11 In Numbers 20, Moses hit the rock with his rod because God asked him precisely to hit the rock with his rod, see Exodus 17 :6. Why did he do so, knowing that God asked him to talk to the rock? That’s very simple: Instead of doing what God asked him to do, Moses did what had worked yet in the past. He knew that when he hit the rock, water would come out. That’s how it worked before, so why not now?

Presumption is often the opposite of obedience. Sometimes, our religious routine and our strict discipline suffocate the voice of God. We disobey God when we do what “worked well” in the past, although he asked us to do something new today. “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert”. (Isaiah 43 :19). |
“Jesus ask us to eliminate our old ways of doing, so that we could taste some new wine.”

My friends, God is not a robot … the bible is not a construction manual … Jesus is not a machine limited to past experiences …. He is alive! And he asked us to eliminate our old ways of doing, so that we could taste some new wine. The Christian life is a relational journey, and adventure with the Holy Spirit where we listen to him by small steps. So, are you ready to follow him? Be blessed. |
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are a person. You love and you are not a robot. Teach me how to listen to you at the right time and to obey immediately. Amen.
