Called to love him

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1 : 9

I have always felt a certain difficulty and confusion, perhaps due to my youth, in trying to discern my calling. What does God desire that I do for Him? What is my destiny?

Am I an evangelist because I enjoy sharing my testimony and talking about Jesus to lost souls? Or, has the Lord called me to be a prophet because I frequently see Him using me as a prophetic voice to edify those around me? Do I also have a pastoral role, as I sincerely tend to the needs of God’s flock? Furthermore, I genuinely love teaching and sharing the profound insights of the Holy Scriptures, which could lead me to become a theologian. Not to mention the noble calling of an apostle, to be a servant to all, to bring a piece of heaven to earth, and to endure the challenges and triumphs for Christ, who ceaselessly amazes me.

So, who am I, and what is my role? What does God expect me to do? What should I do?

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1 : 9

Although it is highly commendable to seek what God calls us to do (refer to Ephesians 4:11-16), I have this impression that there’s a superior way to address all these questions. Moreover, the Bible clearly reveals this way par excellence: “called to the communion of Jesus Christ.”

Paul affirms this mandate, this path of intimate life with Jesus that permeates all our endeavors: “… the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). Jesus himself affirmed this in John 17:3: “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Therefore, whether I’m in the world of finance, a stay-at-home mother, a teacher, a farmer, a fast-food restaurant server, or fully dedicated to ministry, God has called me to live in unity with His Son.

“Let’s be full of joy, gladness, and hope, as little children, because all God wants from us is to love Him.”

In the end, let God script our story. Let’s not get caught in the confusion of trying to identify the specific ministry role He wants for us. Wouldn’t it be disheartening to be paralyzed in our faith and love for Jesus because we’ve expended all our energy in “finding our calling,” when He has merely invited us to live in an intimate relationship with Him? Let’s be filled with joy, gladness, and hope, as little children, because all God desires from us is to love Him.

Prayer: Beloved Holy Spirit, I thank you for making things simple. I am grateful for your love and your presence. Fill me so that I can love Jesus genuinely. I love you, Lord. Forgive me if I’ve complicated the simplicity of my devotion to you by adding someone or something. Be glorified through my affection for Jesus. Amen.
